Ask the Vet - Dog Agressive Towards Cats

My two cats and I recently moved in with my son and his bull terrier. Whenever the dog sees the cats, he goes after them. Is there a way to garner a respectful relationship between these animals so we can all live in peace?

The key question is this: Is the dog trying to reach your cats to play and interact with them, or is he trying to attack them? You are not going to be able to change the dog’s instincts.

If the dog’s desire is to attack, I am afraid there is not much you can do to change that. If his desire is to play, time will allow your cats to recognize that and they will be able to find some neutral ground or rules about their relationship.
