Cutest Pet Contest

Ask the Vet - Cat Stops Grooming

I have a 20-year-old long-haired Siamese cat who is apparently in good health (for her age), except that she stopped grooming herself and her hair has become badly matted. Brushing bothers her, and cutting the matted hair is not working. Is my cat too old to be professionally groomed?

Having your cat professionally groomed is most likely the best way to go at this age. Veterinarians and groomers are experienced in handling geriatric patients with mats. If necessary, your veterinarian may want to use a very light sedative to relieve some of your pet’s stress while the mats are being removed. Once the mats have reached a certain stage, removing them at home becomes very difficult and you need a professional to help.
