Ask the Vet - Itchy Cat
My 12-year-old male cat has started scratching off the fur around his neck. Even after flea treatments, he is still scratching and grooming all the time. What could be causing this?
When cats start scratching and grooming to excess, I usually consider three things:
-
Fleas are always at the top of my list even after treatment. It is possible that your cat has had an allergic reaction to the flea bites. Although the fleas may be gone, he may need to be treated for the inflammation.
-
Food allergies are the next thing I consider with irritations around the head and neck. Food allergies can develop over time, even in pets that have been eating their regular diet, and can be a challenge to resolve. Check with your veterinarian about this possibility.
-
Behavioral issues could be at play as well. If something dramatic has changed in your cat’s life, such as a move to a new home, he may be scratching out of obsessive/compulsive or anxious behavior.
Skin problems are difficult to address without a physical exam, so take your cat in for a visit with your veterinarian. He or she can help you figure out the true cause of the itching and how best to address it.
