Prognathism

What is Prognathism? ?
This inherited jaw condition is rare in cats. The lower jaw (called the mandible) is much longer than the upper jaw (called the maxilla), causing an under bite or undershot jaw. Meshing of teeth can result. Strange as it may sound, undershot jaws are regarded as normal for specific cat breeds such as Persians.

How does my cat get Prognathism??
This is an inherited defect.

How do I know if my cat has Prognathism??
Take time to notice the positioning of your growing kitten’s upper and lower jaws. Cats with prognathism have lower canine teeth that move forward to the incisors. You may also observe that your feline is having trouble eating kibble or notice lesions on the lips and/or gums.

What can I do about Prognathism??
Generally, no treatment is necessary. However, tooth removal may be called for in severe cases that prevent a cat from eating and chewing normally or closing his mouth.

Is there anything I can do to prevent getting Prognathism??
Since this is an inherited condition, there is little you can do other than to practice careful breed selection.

Are there certain breeds that get Prognathism?
Yes. Color points, Exotics and Persians are at greater risk for inheriting this condition.
