Amazing Cats - Beyond the Ordinary

An Unusual Number

Cats normally have five toes on their front paws and four on their back paws. Cats that have more toes than the norm are polydactyl.

A cat in Ontario, Canada, named Jake holds the Guinness World Record for the most toes. This ginger tabby has 28 digits (seven toes on each paw).

A cat from North Carolina named Five Toes has five toes on his front and back paws and, perhaps more surprisingly, two tongues.

A brown Burmese cat from England named Tarawood Antigone had what is believed to be the most kittens in a single litter. She gave birth to 19 kittens in 1970.

A tabby cat from Texas named Dusty holds the Guinness World Record for being the most prolific cat. Dusty delivered 420 kittens in her lifetime, giving birth to her last litter—a single kitten—in 1952.

In 1987, a cat named Kitty became the oldest cat to give birth. She was 30 years of age when her two kittens were born.

KITTENS AND MORE KITTENS
Cats generally give birth to four to six kittens at a time. However, it’s possible for a litter to consist of fewer offspring (although a single kitten is rather rare). Eight kittens is usually the high end of the range.

An average female cat can produce three litters a year. At four to six kittens per litter, this average cat and her offspring could (theoretically) give birth to more than 400,000 cats over seven years.
