Cat Scratch Fever

A bacterial infection of people caused by Bartonella henselae and spread to people via the scratch of a cat. The cat gets infected from the blood of a flea. The infection can lead to fever, lymph node enlargement, and even more severe internal infections

Cataract

A cloudiness of the lens of the eye, reducing vision and giving the eye a pearly appearance.

Cauda Equina Syndrome

The end of the spinal cord and its nerve roots are called the cauda equina. Any damage to this area and its nerves is Cauda Equina Syndrome and is characterized by pain, difficulty waling, loss of control of urine and/or feces, and other signs.

Caudal

Toward the tail or rear of the animal.

Cecum

A blind sac that opens into the colon of many animals.

Centrifuge

A machine that rapidly spins liquid samples and separates out the particles by their density.

Cerebellum

A portion of the brain, located on the brainstem, that controls balance and coordination.

Cerebral

Relating to the part of the brain known as the cerebrum.

Cerebrum

The largest portion of the brain that performs all higher cognitive functions and is situated in the front part of the cranial cavity.

Cerumen

Waxy secretion of the apocrine glands of the ear.

Cervical Disc Disease

If an intervertebral disc puts pressure on the spinal cord in the neck region causing pressure and pain it is caused cervical disc disease

Cervical vertebral instability (wobblers)

Compression of the cervical (neck) spinal cord caused by instability or malformation of the cervical vertebrae. Dogs show lack of muscle coordination in the back legs and possibly neck.

Cesarian Section

A surgical procedure used at the end of pregnancy to manually remove babies from the uterus.

Chemotherapy

Treatment of a disease with chemical agents (drugs); the term is most commonly used to describe the treatment of cancer with medication.

Cherry Eye

Also known as Prolapse of the Gland of the Third Eyelid. A condition of smaller breeds where the gland of the third eyelid slips out leading to red mass in the corner of the eye. This is treated by surgically replacing the gland into its normal location

Chocolate Toxicity

Chocolate contains theobromine. This product when ingested in sufficient quantity can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, tremors, seizures, a racing heart rate, and even death.

Cholangiohepatitis

Inflammation of the gall bladder, bile ducts, and liver

Cholangitis

Inflammation of a bile duct; see cholecystitis.

Cholecystitis

Inflammation of the gallbladder; see cholangitis.

Chondroprotective Agent

A nutritional supplement that protects cartilage.
