A Horse Is a Horse, of Course
Four newborn Przewalski’s horses have joined the herd at the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park. The park now has 18 of the critically endangered breed. What exactly is a Przewalski’s horse? Although expert opinion varies on its scientific classification, it is without question a wild horse. The zoo’s breeding program intends to reintroduce these horses into the wild; some have already been let loose in Kazakhstan. There was a time when wild herds of the magnificent Przewalski’s horses roamed the sparse grasslands of Asia and Europe. Unfortunately, the pressures of modern life have pushed them to the point of extinction. But don’t worry about this tough breed: Within 30 minutes of birth, a foal is up and ready to travel with the herd.
