Unleashed! Book Corner - Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine, and a Miracle
They say a dog is a man’s best friend, and this could not be truer than with Marine Major Brian Dennis and Nubs. Dennis’ book, “Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine, and a Miracle” (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, 2009) chronicles the pair’s experience. Nubs, an Iraqi dog of war, never had a home or person of his own. He was the leader of a pack of wild dogs living off the land and barely surviving. But Nub’s life changed when he met Dennis. The two formed a strong friendship, solidified by Dennis’ willingness to give Nubs the kind of care and attention he had never before received. Nubs was part of Dennis’ human “pack.” That is, until duty required Dennis and the Marines to relocate 70 miles away—without Nubs. The lonely dog didn’t understand that Marines were not allowed to have pets.
Every time I read the book, I get teary-eyed because it shows just how powerful the bond is between a man and his dog. The story of what a man would do to save his friend will warm the hearts of anyone, especially pet lovers. The pictures and e-mails from Dennis bring this book to life, and I feel like I am experiencing this journey with them. ?Everyone needs this book in their household. It is a must-read!
