Tortoises Set Lifespan Records
Jonathan the tortoise, one of the oldest living animals on our planet, is believed to be around 176 years of age. He lives on the grounds of the governor’s residence in St. Helena, an island in the South Atlantic Ocean. The previous oldest living tortoise was believed to be Harriet, a giant Galapagos land tortoise, who died in 2006 in Australia at the age of 175. But the all-time oldest tortoise—and quite possibly the oldest animal ever—is Tui Malila, who was at least 188 when he died in Madagascar in 1965.
