Leo and the Bear
Actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio is lending his name, face, time, and talent to getting the word out about global warming.
In addition to recently traveling to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon in Iceland to view the effects of global warming firsthand, he started a foundation that runs a no-frills informational website (www.leonardodicaprio.org) about this and other ecological issues. Interestingly enough, DiCaprio is not the poster boy for global warming; instead, it is Knut, an adorable polar bear cub, who has been employed to help illuminate the harsh reality of the situation.
GLOBAL WARMING: THE FACTS
Global warming is taking a tremendous toll on the estimated 22,000 to 27,000 polar bears worldwide. For instance, in Canada’s Hudson Bay, the ice is breaking apart 2 1/2 weeks earlier than it did 30 years ago, giving the bears less time than they previously had to hunt and build fat reserves. Polar bears are becoming thinner, and cub survival rates are dropping drastically. Visit www.polarbearsinternational.org to learn more and find out how to make a difference.
