Endangered Gorillas Suddenly Prosper
In Parc National des Volcans, an hour into the Rwandan rainforest, several hundred mountain gorillas reside where they were thought to be fast dwindling. A recent survey on the primates indicates an astounding discovery: a sudden 17% increase in population. Chief park warden Justin Rurangirwa said, “There is no difference in birth rates. What has changed is that there is no more poaching.” The result is more surviving babies and parents and more available, safe breeding grounds for these endangered primates.
