The Mystery of the Bungled Burglary

Her name is Aggie. Short for Agatha Christie, the well-known mystery writer. Little did Lynn Seely suspect when she rescued the tiny 5-week-old from a shelter that Aggie would grow up to foil crime just like one of her namesake’s famous detectives.

According to Lynn, Aggie likes to keep a little mystery in everyone’s life. “She loves to climb, jump on our other cat Mesha, and leap out of hiding places to startle people,” says Lynn. “Apparently, she is very good at startling people.” And a good thing, too, for Lynn and her husband John as they discovered one cold winter night.

The couple was sleeping soundly. The last thing Lynn remembered was Aggie curled up at their feet as usual. Suddenly, there was a man’s scream, the sounds of a struggle, and then silence.

Lynn and John crept down the stairs, terrified at what they would find. By the time they reached the first floor, all that was left was an open window with a single shoe sitting on the sill.

Quickly, they called the police. It was then that Lynn noticed Aggie standing tall on her scratching post. “Her fur was standing all on end, and she looked to be twice her normal size,” Lynn recalls. “Her tail was swishing back and forth. I swear that she was actually chortling. I’d never her seen her so proud of herself.”

They found blood on Aggie’s white chin and paws … human blood. Blood was on the windowsill as well.

A police officer soon arrived on the scene. Left behind by the intruder were a few tools and a very odd set of footprints—one sockprint and one shoeprint—leading away from the house. Lynn, John, and the officer put two and two together and realized that Aggie must have attacked him and scared him away.

Aggie’s courage was praised both at home and in her community. “Aggie got a lot of extra attention after the incident, including a special breakfast the next morning,” Lynn says. Her heroics were lauded in numerous newspaper and radio stories, she has been featured on PAX-TV’s Miracle Pets, and Lynn is even writing a book about her couragous cat that she hopes to finish by spring.

But there is more to Aggie’s story than meets the eye. You see, Aggie is completely blind. But her love for her owners is not difficult to see.
